Lego: Amazing Then, Amazing Now!
I received my first Lego set on my fifth birthday and a lifelong love was born. A good while later (it must have been a year or two at least) one of the parts in my first Lego set broke.  It was one of the hinge pieces that allowed a ramp to close up into the body of the spaceship … this is to say it was a piece that was central to the set and also unique.  My mom tried gluing it back...

Brian Dunning is My Hero
Brian Dunning runs a skeptical podcast that aims to bridge the divide between skepticism and American pop culture.  This episode is pretty amazing: Sarah Palin is Not Stupid http://skeptoid.com/episodes/4160

iPhone 3.0 + Streaming Bluetooth Audio = Continued...
A few quick notes: Kenwood stereo continues to kick butt.  I really like the iPod by Hand mode as it lets me use the iPhone as a ‘remote’ in the car stereo.  Make sure you’ve got a long enough cable for use, of course. If you want to cut the cord, the streaming audio bluetooth profile Apple supports in the iPhone OS 3.0 works very well out of the box with the Kenwood. One...

iPhone + Bluetooth in Car = Sweeeet
With the new job I realized I need to get myself a new car.  One of my goals was to have a way to plug in my iPhone to listen to my podcasts and to use the phone part when needed. Several cars in the luxury class have iPod/iPhone hook-ups available as well as bluetooth connectivity, but many of the offerings are either expensive, low on practical features, or part of other packages that force you...

Management Consultants Are Fail
Pardon the silly title.  The Atlantic has a great article on the ‘science’ of management.  It is quite a good read. http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200606/stewart-business

I am Loving This Holiday Season
Not that I am a Scrooge or anything, but I have really enjoyed this holiday season so far.  I don’t usually enjoy Christmas … nothing like I used to when I was a kiddo. I suspect a lot of it has to do with my kiddo getting so into the tree and the lights.  She loves to sing, so carols are just new songs to sing. I picked out a few toys for her already … and dang if I...

If You Need a Smile ... →
~15 min long video that will make all but the coldest of hearts warm.  Enjoy! (the link is in the title)

It can't be this simple, can it?
US Banks have been getting gobs of money from the US government but they still don’t want to lend, much to the US Treasury’s and Federal Reserve’s dismay. It seems to me (remember, BA in econ so I know just enough to be dangerous … so I really don’t think I can be 100% correct on this) that banks don’t want to lend to each other or to anyone else because they...

Religion and MMO's
While listening to an episode of Econ Talk, the guest speaker, Edward Castronova, likened the lore of a massively multiplayer online game (MMO) such as World of Warcraft to religion.  (Please note:  I am grossly oversimplifying … if you enjoy playing MMOs it is a great listen) He also spoke to the human need for mythology and lore in most peoples’ lives.  The host and Mr. Castronova...

Comments!
Waffling on adding comments to this thing.  For the moment, this log is about me writing, not others reading. I’ll probably add comments in as a technical exercise.  Who knows, maybe it will become useful in the future. <plans to update this post when commenting added> Edit:  Holy wow, I got that done in about 2 minutes.  Sweet!

Personal Commitment
If I don’t post this publicly, I’ll probably fall off the wagon again soon. I don’t promise good posts.  All I promise is a post.  The plan is a post a day starting today.  I *must* get into the habit, then I can scale back later if needed to actually make quality posts.  I know myself pretty well—the habit can only be formed by daily repetition.  Having ‘off’...

Months Later ...
Wow, the initial impetus for my love / hate relationship with skepticism certainly put me onto a heck of a path. I stopped blogging because I got so busy consuming skeptical material.  (Not that I actually started blogging, really … three posts?!  Ha!)  I feel like I’ve come up for air and  something I read today started to clarify what I mean about the ‘love / hate’...

I am in a Love / Hate Relationship with Skepticism
This post is now irrelevant, I have come to terms with my Love / Hate of skepticism.  The good news is thinking about this has lead to a heck of a lot of cool reading.

Geek Cred. I Haz It!
Somehow I got worried about my ‘geek cred’.  I suspect this had to do with reading tech blogs and not knowing about a lot of the things the people mention off-hand.  It is probably unintentional, but the nature of the comment generally assumes everyone who is interested in topic X must know about video game Z, movie Q, and book Y. Holy cow, who has time to read/watch/play all of those?!  OK, I...

Fortune Cookies -- Not Just for Eating ...
I had a fortune cookie with dinner yesterday.  Normally, I don’t remember to eat them, and even then I often don’t bother with reading the fortune.  In general, I thought of them the same as horoscopes and prophecies—something too generic to have any real predictive power.  Because of this, I tend to not even bother reading them … Yesterday I realized I have been squandering an...

Initial Postings ...
So far, this has been a great Friday! * Finally got over most of my cold (the type that lingers for weeks) * Had a great talk with a friend * Found a mission for Twitter * Decided to get crackin’ on a blog The ultimate plan is to have two blogs, one for random musings that don’t fit into a tweet (this blog), and another where I will post more well-fleshed-out ideas on a central theme. I’ll get...

My Assumptions
[UPDATE DATE] (to be changed every time I update this post) Here is where I will try to explain many of my assumptions.  It is easier than repeating myself every blog post.

About Me
My name is Jason Daubert—I use the Ja7on name in homage to Neal Stephenson’s incredible book ‘Snow Crash’ (there is a programmer named Da5id, and Ja7on just naturally flows).  My last name is quite well known in legal circles due to a very large US Supreme Court decision, so I expect nobody will ever be able to find this blog.  I suspect that will be a good thing … I...
